Mississauga’s Quenippenon Park declared home field for Sheridan’s Varsity Men’s Baseball and Women’s Softball teams
Student athletes from Sheridan’s Varsity Men’s Baseball and Women’s Softball teams will now have a home field to call their own, thanks to a partnership between Sheridan and the City of Mississauga.
At an event on Saturday, September 21, Mississauga’s Quenippenon Meadows Park, located just east of Sheridan’s Hazel McCallion (HMC) Campus, was designated as the home diamond for the two teams. The event also marked Sheridan’s adoption of the park, committing to maintain it for both the Sheridan and Mississauga community.
Sheridan introduced OCAA Men’s and Women’s Varsity Baseball and Softball Teams in 2022, naming the HMC Campus in Mississauga as the teams’ “home campus”. Since then, Sheridan Athletics has worked with the City to rent various ball diamonds for home games and practices.
By securing Quenippenon Park for all home games and practices this 2024 season and onwards, students will develop a stronger relationship with its campus communities.
The positive impact athletics can have on youth is a topic that’s near and dear to my heart,” said Janet Morrison, President and Vice Chancellor at Sheridan College. “Besides rigorous practice and training, student athletes learn to set goals, manage their time, and collaborate with their teammates. With support from the City of Mississauga, our varsity baseball and softball teams now have a home to practice these fundamental skills.”
To support the development of baseball and softball facilities in Mississauga, Sheridan Athletics will contribute a scoreboard to the diamonds, enhancing the overall experience for players, coaches, spectators, officials and the wider community. The scoreboards will be installed in Spring 2025.
“Sheridan College is an important part of our city and a valued partner for us, and we are pleased to collaborate with them on this wonderful initiative which provides their sports teams with a place to call home, while also benefitting our city’s residents with an enhanced sports field,” said Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish. “Together, we are promoting and enhancing opportunities for healthy living – a key priority for the City. I look forward to continuing to work with Sheridan College, and other community partners, on initiatives which contribute to the creation of a city which is second to none.”
Sheridan will provide ongoing maintenance and technical support for the scoreboard and continue to care for Quenippenon Park’s overall ecosystem. Sheridan will demonstrate care and environmental stewardship through various initiatives including youth programming and park cleanups.
“Embedding Sheridan’s athletics program into Mississauga provides opportunities for our students to immerse themselves in the local community, and cultivate a deeper sense of belonging,” says Jim Flack, Sheridan’s Director of Athletics & Recreation “We’re grateful to the City of Mississauga for continuing to embrace our students, and hope that our student athletes will serve as role models for the community, as they pursue post-secondary education while competing in a sport they love.”
The adoption of Quenippenon Park is in line with Sheridan’s strategic plan, Sheridan 2027: Galvanizing Education, which outlines its commitment to advancing infrastructure renewal while addressing environmental challenges. Grounded in a Memorandum of Understanding established in 2023, it also represents one of several examples of continued collaboration between Sheridan and the City of Mississauga to improve the student experience.
